Ministry of External Affairs of India operates G2G (Government to Government) Pilgrim group tours to Mt. Kailash as per Indo China bilateral agreement  this route runs under quota allotted by Chinese Govt. which do not fulfill the total demand of pilgrims so MEA permits pilgrim on Lottery system.

  2. It is organized under a bilateral agreement between India & China Governments, thus all the pilgrims get the diplomatic protection, medical facilities and security en route.
  3. Economical. as it is subsidized by central Govt. as well as by some state Govt. of India.
  4. Minimum health related problems as route ensures high altitude acclimatization & all the pilgrims are required to undergo a comprehensive medical test before selection.
  5. Opportunity to explore Oam Parvat, Adi Kailash Enroute in India while trek.
  6. The pilgrims get the opportunity to see The Om Parvat which otherwise is not visible from any other place.

Disadvantages:

  1. Most of the part yatries have to cover by trekking only.
  2. There is a selection process for this program. MEA has the mandate to send a total of 16 batches of 60 pilgrims each. Thus a total of Max 960 people can go through MEA program in each year. One gets little choice/ flexibility in batch/dates and batch mates.
  3.  It takes a total of 29-30 days which includes 3 days for the medical check-up at Delhi. The days can extend by 1-2 days in case of a landslide en route.
  4. One has to stay in basic (though highly comfortable) fiber glass huts with mattresses on the floor for most part of Yatra. Facilities are minimal in terms of electricity, mobile connectivity and Hot Water for Bathing.

Process:

The process gets initiated through advertisements of MEA published in the leading newspapers in the month of January every year, inviting applications for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. There is NO application fees. The only requirements are the application form, 2 passport size photographs and a copy of valid passport which should have a minimum of 6 month validity w.e.f. May of the Year.

The closing date for applications is usually between 15-20 March and a computerized draw is held in the month of April selecting the applicants according to the batch.

The selected applicant gets the telegram confirming his/her selection in the last week of April and is supposed to confirm back his/her participation usually before 3rd week of May by sending a DD of 5,000 INR in favor of KMVN which gets adjusted against the total yatra cost.  However this fee is non-refundable if one does not go on Yatra due to any reason including failing in the medical fitness test.

New Route using Nathu La Pass border near Sikkim

After long waiting for new route MEA of India have planned to operate Kailash Yatra using Nathula Pass from 2015. Till now this project is under survey and possibly it will be also run G2G at present. With over 3 decade of experience of operating trekking & expeditions in Tibet as per Mr. Jaysinh Thakker This route will be better then route used by MEA before in sense of travelling but with this route Indian pilgrims who are from sea level have to spend more time in Tibet (High altitude) which will be not easier for them as per good trekking advice it is always better to spend lesser time in high altitude of Tibet specially people from sea level.

Advantages:

  1. Accompany with IAS or first grade Govt. officer as a Liaison Officer, support of Sikkim Border Police  & Sikkim Ministry of Tourism makes it well organized.

  3. Economical. as it is subsidized by central Govt. as well as by some state Govt. of India.
  4. Opportunity to explore Gyantse & Shigatse Monasteries Enroute in Tibet.

Disadvantages:

  1. There is a selection process for this program. Do not get choice/ flexibility in batch/dates and batch mates.
  2. It takes a total of 17- 19 days which includes 3 days for the medical check-up at Delhi. The days can extend by 1-2 days in case of a landslide en route.
